According to the International Labor Organization, more than 2.78 million workers die due to work related diseases and accidents in the workplace. Aside from this, an average of 374 million cases of illnesses and nonfatal work injuries are being reported to workplaces, which often results to extended absences. While a lot of nations are already offering quite the percentage of their resources to meet the economic problems related to healthier workplaces and occupational safety, an integral part of ensuring you can perform in the workplace is if you know signs of work injuries you shouldn’t ignore. Are some parts of your body tender?

You know something is painful if your body responds with such a feeling when you press a finger into the area. This technique, albeit simple, is helpful not just in identifying how painful an existing injury is, but if you actually have an injury in the first place.

  • Places such as the joints, muscles, and bones don’t immediately show signs of injury. If you press a finger on a particular area and it hurts, this might be a sign that something’s wrong. You can take this further by pressing a finger against both sides of the area, and on the opposite part of your body. If one side hurts more than the other, then perhaps the painful part has an injury.

Are some parts of your body swelling?

Sometimes, when it comes to superficial bumps, people may have a tendency to ignore them. This is especially if they don’t immediately see an injury appearing. If parts of your body swell after a particular incident, however, then you may have a work injury.

  • Do remember however that swelling isn’t necessarily something that happens with obvious dark spots. When swelling occurs inside a joint, for instance, you wouldn’t be able to notice this right away.
  • You can notice this particular “hidden” pain if there’s a reduced range of motion that is accompanied by feelings of tightness, stiffness, and pain.
  • Try to take note if your joint has a grinding feeling or a clicking feeling when you move around. If you also feel your joint is constrained, jammed, or locked, then something might be wrong with it as well.

Regular activities such as squatting or climbing the stairs can give us a bit of joint pain. If this is the case, then it might indicate that something is injured or structurally damaged along the joint region. Do remember that joints are exposed a bit more than the other parts of the body, and they aren’t covered by thick muscles so they tend to be tender. That’s why wrists, elbows, ankles, and knees often experience pain when pressure is applied to them.

  • Do get yourself checked if the pain has persisted for more than two months or six weeks.
  • Are you feeling numb in some areas of the body?
  • If there’s a feeling of tingling or numbing sensation around your body, these can be a sign of nerve compression. When unchecked, these can be signs that you may have a very serious injury that could have lasting consequences.
